History of Austin High Athletics

With a history dating back to the school’s founding in 1881, Austin High possesses a distinguished athletic legacy. Over the years, Maroons athletic teams have amassed over 15,000 victories, hundreds of district championships and a handful of State Championships (baseball, football, lacrosse and volleyball). Austin High has provided a platform for tens of thousands of student athletes to shine on the field, court, track or pool. Thousands of those Maroons have continued their athletic careers at the collegiate level and a special group even played professional sports. Notable Austin High athletics alumni include golf legend Ben Crenshaw, former MLB player and manager Don Baylor, basketball players Jade Clack and Xavier Silas, football players Charles Wright, Emory Blake, and Zay Jones, and the renowned television announcer Verne Lundquist. Adding to this impressive list is legendary golf instructor Harvey Penick, also a proud graduate of Austin High. Those thousands of Austin High alumni make up Maroons Nation and are truly Loyal Forever.
