About Austin High Athletics

Austin High athletics have been a source of community pride for over a century. The Maroons maintain a robust athletic program, engaging over 650 students annually across 18 University Interscholastic League (UIL) sports and 5 club sports. The diverse athletic offerings at Austin High School include: Baseball, Basketball, Cheer, Cross Country, Flag Football, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Mountain Biking, Powerlifting, Soccer, Softball, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball, Water Polo, and Wrestling. Notably, most sports provide opportunities for both boys and girls at the Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity levels. As a member of District 26, Austin High competes in the highly competitive 6A classification, the highest level of athletics in Texas.

Nestled in downtown Austin, Texas, along the scenic banks of Lady Bird Lake. For decades Stephen F. Austin High has the heartbeat of the City of Austin. The school boasts numerous on-campus athletic facilities including two gymnasiums, a weight room, training room, tennis courts, pickle ball courts, a track, and dedicated fields for baseball, football, lacrosse, and softball. While many Austin High home games are held on campus, the Maroons also utilize nearby venues such as Butler Field, Burger Stadium, Chalmers Field, and House Park. House Park, the Maroons’ home stadium for football, is conveniently located just five minutes from the school in downtown Austin. The main gymnasium at Austin High is named the Roosevelt Nivens Gym, a tribute to the Maroons’ former coach and teacher.

With a history dating back to the school’s founding in 1881, Austin High possesses a distinguished athletic legacy. Over the years, Maroons athletic teams have amassed over 15,000 victories, and hundreds of student-athletes have continued their careers at the collegiate level. Notable Austin High athletics alumni include golf legend Ben Crenshaw, former MLB player and manager Don Baylor, basketball players Jade Clack and Xavier Silas, football players Charles Wright, Emory Blake, and Zay Jones, and the renowned television announcer Verne Lundquist. Adding to this impressive list is legendary golf instructor Harvey Penick, also a proud graduate of Austin High.
